 Peter Navarro is a professor at the Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. With a Masters of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard, this distinguished macroeconomist has written extensively on Asia as well as lived and worked there. Peter’s new book Crouching Tiger provides the most complete and accurate assessment of the probability of confl ict between the United States and the rising Asian superpower. Equally important, it lays out an in-depth analysis of the possible pathways to peace. Chang is a lawyer, author, and television pundit, best known for his book The Coming Collapse of China (2001), in which he argued that the hidden nonperforming loans of the “Big Four” Chinese State banks would likely bring down China’s fi nancial system and its communist government and China would collapse in 2006, 2011, 2012. Mr. Chang provided the Forward in Crouching Tiger: What China’s Militarism Means for the World.

In this program, German Consul General Mr. Neumann will discuss the EU’s common foreign policy, followed by French Consul General Mr. Lemoine and Former Vice Consul of Britain, Mr. Cummings, on the EU-US economic cooperation.

Lemoine

Mr. Christophe Lemoine is the Consul General of France in Los Angeles. He is a former student of the Institute of Political Studies of Bordeaux and holds a Doctorate-level degree in International Law and International Organizations Law, as well as a Diploma in Economic and European International Law, both from the University of Geneva. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 16 January 2001. Appointed to the Human Resources Department, Lemoine then joined the French Embassy in Berlin in 2004 as Third Secretary. He served at the External Relations Division of the European Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2007 to 2009, then at the Office of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2012. Having been Chief of Staff for Mr. Laurent Fabius–Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development–from 2012 to 2015, he was recently appointed by decree of the President of the Republic as Consul General of France in Los Angeles. He took office on July 13th 2015.

Neumann

Mr. Hans Jörg Neumann has served as German Consul General in Los Angeles since July 2015. Prior to this, he was German Ambassador to Benin in West Africa. His extensive knowledge of the United States was acquired during his time as an exchange student with the American Field Service in Pennsylvania in 1974, and while serving as Political Advisor and Head of Consular and Legal Affairs at the German Embassy in Washington from 2001 to 2005. Neumann joined the German Foreign Service in 1987. He has served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Germany Embassy in Bucharest, Head of Consular and Legal Affairs in Prague as well as in the Economic Department of the German Embassy in Cairo and as Foreign Desk Officer for the Maghreb countries. Before starting his career in the German Foreign Service, Neumann studied law in Frankfurt and Lausanne, Switzerland. From 1984 to 1985, he spent a year at the Ecole National d’ Administration in Paris. He practiced law in Frankfurt from 1986 to 1987. Mr. Neumann was born in Berlin and has three daughters.

Mr. James Cummings is Vice President of Business Development at London and Partners, the Mayor of London’s promotional company. London and Partners works to build London’s international reputation and attract investment and visitor spending. He is based in Los Angeles, California and works with US companies that are expanding into and growing operations in London.

James was previously Vice Consul at UK Trade & Investment at the British Consulate-General in Los Angeles. Before moving to Los Angeles, James worked as Inward Investment Officer at the City of London and during this time he became a Freeman of the City of London. James also has a Masters Degree in London Studies and now lives in Los Angeles, California.

chrislynchMr. Chris Lynch‘s expertise is in international business strategy. He currently is Global Marketing Manager for DestinHaus, a boutique management consultancy in Orange County, CA. He gives back to the community as President of the non-profit Community Vitalization Council (CiViC 180) which focuses on building local business communities. He developed CiViC 180’s signature program, the International Business Accelerator. Chris is a retired US Foreign Service Officer who dealt with economic and business policy issues in Washington DC and at five US Embassies in Europe and Latin America, last as Consul General to Hamburg. Upon returning to the US, he focused on local economic development at the Irvine and the Santa Rosa Chambers of Commerce. He was the SBA Orange County/Inland Empire Small Business Advocate of the Year in 2012. He teaches international business at Golden Gate University and Economics at Long Beach City College. Chris graduated from Georgetown University’s Foreign Service School and has a Masters in Economics from Virginia Tech. He speaks professionally fluent Spanish and German.

 Toward a Strategy for the Middle East, AGM

 President Obama has acknowledged that the United States does not have a “strategy” for dealing with Syria, now the epicenter of a region facing multiple civil wars and violent crises of state legitimacy.  To confront the most urgent security aspect of this complex set of problems, the U.S. has rallied an international coalition of states  determined to defeat ISIS.  None of these coalition partners is more crucial to success than Turkey, and none of the coalition members’ bilateral relationships is more difficult for both parties to manage.  To better inform US and world publics and national public policy processes about the larger challenge of developing a strategy not only for but also with the Middle East,  the Atlantic Council has drawn together eminent persons and experts from across the Middle East region, Europe, and the United States, in its “Middle East Strategy Task Force.” Bipartisan co-chairs,  former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, are leading the Task Force’s efforts to help the current and next US administrations, with our European and Middle Eastern Partners,  jointly to develop such a strategy.  The focus is on collaboration among stakeholders in the Middle East, Europe, and U.S. in regenerating a stable regional order based on legitimate, well-governed states dedicated to the service of their people.   Former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis J. Ricciardone,  Vice President of the Atlantic Council and Director of its  Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, will outline the approach of the Task Force, with a particular focus on Turkey’s pivotal role,  and invite WAC members’  advice and questions.

 

The AGM meeting is the kick-off to a brand new year of events and programming. WAC is excited with the lineup of speakers and panels that we are assembling for the 2015-2016 year. The world has many challenges and the U.S. continues to be instrumental in leading and finding solutions. WAC welcomes all new and old members. This is an opportunity for the general membership to meet the incoming Executive Board and the new class of trustees, as well as provide feedback on what members would like to see from the World Affairs Council of Orange County.

 

 

FJRic photo ACFrancis J. Ricciardone is Atlantic Council vice president and director of the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East. Before joining the Council he was a career Foreign Service officer in Washington, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, including assignments as ambassador to Turkey (2011-14), chargé d’affaires and deputy ambassador to Afghanistan (2009-10), ambassador to Egypt (2005-8), and ambassador to the Philippines and Palau (2002-5).

As Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s special coordinator for the transition of Iraq (1999-2001), Ambassador Ricciardone supported the reestablishment of the democratic opposition to the Saddam Hussein regime.  Secretary of State Colin Powell assigned him in 2004 to organize the new US Embassy in Baghdad to replace the Coalition Provisional Authority. He worked with Egyptian, Israeli, and other international military forces as chief of the Civilian Observer Unit of the Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt’s Sinai Desert (1989-91). In 1993 he served as political advisor to US and Turkish generals commanding Operation Northern Watch in northern Iraq, based in Turkey. Before joining the Foreign Service, Ambassador Ricciardone held a Fulbright Scholarship in Italy, and taught at international schools in Italy and in Iran. He graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1973. He speaks Italian, Turkish, Arabic, and French. He is married to Dr. Marie Ricciardone, a molecular biologist.

Dimitris-Mahlis-4084_originalDimitris Mahlis is a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in the Los Angeles area.  Since coming to LA, Dimitris’ skills on oud, guitar and other stringed instruments have led him into a rich variety of performing and recording experiences. Dimitris has had the good fortune to receive training in both Western and Eastern musical systems. His style is known as both soulful and original.

Some recent recording credits include the Oscar winning film “Argo” With composer Alexander Desplat. “Huun Huur Tu” with Carmen Rizzo, “Vino” with Robi Draco Rosa,”O Samanos” Dionisis Savopoulo-Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Dimitris also composed the music for the recent film ” Coffee and Sugar” and is featured on the soundtrack of the upcoming film “The Algerian.”

Dimitris has performed and toured throughout the world with artists such as A.R.Rahman, Axiom of Choice, Dionisis Savopoulos, Niyaz, Freddie Hubbard, Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Kevyn Lettau, Russell Ferrante and others. He composes all the original music for his projects including 4 albums with His duo project “Wahid” “Protoleia” with the Mahlis- Panos Project “Prana” with the trio, Prana and “Aphrodite Moves On” with his electric quartet, Babaghanoush.

IMG_2730Col Jim Bullion USA (Ret), Former Director, Task Force for Business Stability Operations (TFBSO) at the U.S. Department of Defense.

From 2010 to 2014, TFBSO worked in Afghanistan, at the direction of the Secretary of Defense, coordinating with  the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, ISAF, the Government of Afghanistan and other agencies. TFBSO’s mission was to help Afghanistan’s private sector grow by attracting foreign investors and encouraging local entrepreneurship. The major areas of effort for TFBSO were in the minerals, energy, indigenous industries and agriculture sectors of the Afghan economy.

Prior to his current position, Col. Bullion was President of Phoenix Global Services LLC, a consulting and investing company he founded in 2005. He has more than 20 years of experience in international business management, consulting, and military service. As an Army Reserve Officer, Col. Bullion has served two tours in Iraq, first as Executive Officer and Commander of a Civil Affairs Battalion attached to the 10th Special Forces Group and to the 101st Airborne Division, then as Plans and Operations Chief for the Multinational Security Transition Command commanded by General David Petraeus. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal (2OLC) and the Combat Action Badge for his work in Iraq. Prior to his two tours in Iraq, Mr. Bullion was a Vice President at Genuity, Inc., a $1 billion publicly traded telecommunications services company and built and managed international operations for UNIFI Communications, a high-growth startup company which developed and provided leading-edge data communications services.

Mr. Bullion is a graduate of Dartmouth College and also was commissioned there as an infantry officer through ROTC. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School and is fluent in French.

Mr. Delawari was appointed as governor by presidential decree No. 78 dated November 30, 2011. His nomination was confirmed by the (Wolsi Jirga) the lower house of parliament on November 26, 2011. Delawari handed in his resignation on 6 December 2014 to retire and spend time with his family in Southern California.

Governor Delawari brings with him a diverse professional background and rich experience in commercial banking, international business/ leadership. Prior to this assignment he has served as Minister Advisor to President Karzi on Banking and Private Sector, member of DAB Supreme Council, founder and CEO of Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (2003-2004; 2008-November 2011), Governor Da Afghanistan Bank (2004 -2007 and 2011-2014), Senior Advisor to Minister of Finance Afghanistan (2002) and Vice President of Multinational Division, Lloyds Bank of California (1986-2002).

Governor Delawari was born in Kabul Afghanistan on November 23, 1942. He left his home country in 1967 to accept a Colombo Plan university scholarship in the United Kingdom in the fields of commerce and economics. Here, he performed basic training at National Westminster Bank, and then continued his studies at the UCLA. When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Governor Delawari decided to settle in Pasadena, CA . Governor Delawari returned to Afghanistan and was given the task of strengthening the national bank, with the help of future governor Anwar ul-Haq Ahady and then Minister of Finance Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai who is the current President of Afghanistan.

Governor Delawari earned a B.S. in Business/Economics from UCLA and was awarded a Professional Designation in International Business from UCLA 1967-1969. He was the recipient of Colombo Plan (Bank Management) Scholarship in London-England.

Dr. Tom Campbell was appointed Dean of the Fowler School of Law in February, 2011. He came to Chapman in January 2009 as a visiting Presidential Fellow and Fletcher Jones Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law. Prior to joining Chapman, he was the Bank of America Dean and Professor of Business from 2002 to 2008 at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Campbell was a Professor of Law at Stanford University from 1987-2002; Associate Professor at Stanford, 1983-1987; a member of the United States Congress from 1989-1993 and 1995-2001; a member of the California State Senate from 1993-1995; and the director of the California Department of Finance from 2004-2005. He has a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago, and a JD, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where he also served as a member of the board of editors of the Harvard Law Review. He was a law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Byron White, and to US Court of Appeals Judge George E. MacKinnon; a White House Fellow; executive assistant to the Deputy Attorney General, Department of Justice; and, director of the Bureau of Competition at the Federal Trade Commission.

Dr. Campbell’s principal area of academic work is in the application of economics to legal questions. He has published articles in the Harvard Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, the UCLA Law Review, the Texas Law Review, the Hastings Law Journal, and the Antitrust Law Journal, among others. He is the author of the book Separation of Powers in Practice, published by Stanford University Press(2004). Since 2001, Dr. Campbell and his wife Susanne have taught in Africa as volunteers on seven separate occasions, in Ghana, Eritrea and Rwanda, where they taught courses in fund raising (Susanne) and international financial institutions, business strategy and constitutional law (Tom), at the following universities: Ashesi University, Accra, Ghana; Kigali Institute of Science and Technology, Kigali, Rwanda; School of Banking and Finance, Kigali, Rwanda; and the University of Asmara, Asmara, Eritrea.

“Growing Home” Documentary Viewing & Expert Panel Discussion moderated by Taymor Kamrany, WAC Board Member

 

The film, “Growing Home” takes place amid Syria’s refugee crisis that has displaced nine million people; a Syrian barber struggles to maintain normality in the Zaatari refugee camp. Following the film will be a panel discussion with the film’s director, Faisal Attrache and panelists.

 Faisal Attrach

is a Syrian-American filmmaker born in Syria and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended UCLA where he received BAs in International Development Studies and Environmental Studies. While at UCLA he fell in love with film and added a Film and TV minor to his studies, set on making it his career.  After graduating, Faisal spent a year living in Syria where he made his first short film and studied Arabic. Faisal attended the University of Southern California’s (USC) prestigious School of Cinematic Arts where he received an MFA in Film and Television Production in 2014.  Faisal is a writer/director who strives to tell unique stories across many genres, with a powerful, socially conscious message.

 Souzab Baaj

Souzan Baaj

 is the CEO of Isra Couture. She is the Chairwoman of the Syrian Institute for Progress (SIP), an organization that focuses on addressing and supporting the needs of Syrian refugees. She provides information and advice on the dynamic changes of the Syrian revolution and the opposition in order to help find the most suitable and lasting solution to the crisis. Souzan has been an activist from the beginning of the Syrian revolution. She established and was the president for the Syrian American Council, Los Angeles chapter, (2011-2012) She had worked hard in sending humanitarian aid to the Syrian Refugees and she was able to send 6 of 40-foot containers filled with baby milk, blankets, sleeping bags, and winter jackets for the Children at the camps. Currently she has been working with the Shriner hospital to bring burnt Syrian children to be treated in the US.

Puneh Ala’i

is the founder of For The Unseen, which is a non-profit organization that is currently helping Syrian Refugees. The overall mission of For The Unseen, is to improve the quality of life of those around the globe who are impacted by illness, poverty and/or societal conflicts by providing sustainable solutions to alleviate human suffering.

Puneh is a product of immigrant parents, who was raised with the belief that “Mankind is One” and service is a key factor in one’s contribution to this life. In 2013, her organization helped open a Syrian refugee school in Lebanon that originally had 350 children, and now it has over 1,000 children. She has traveled into Syria four different times to provide immediate aid to the refugees in the worst conditions. She fund raised money before each trip, and 100% of the donations were used to buy food in bulk, hospital supplies and toys for the children.

 

Taymor

Taymor Shah Kamrany 

Mr. Taymor Kamrany is a seasoned business development professional with over 15 years of proven leadership and management accomplishments in both domestic and international sectors.  His areas of specialty include strategy, business development and proposal writing.

Taymor’s outside activities include prior host of US-based satellite TV station that broadcasts worldwide. The “Professionals Network Show” was aimed at the younger generation of Afghans. Previously, Taymor served as advisor to the Minister of Finance of Afghanistan (current President), where he played a leading role in the creation and implementation of a computerized reporting system for that country’s Treasury. He trained and supervised employees of eight provinces on methods of data collection, analysis, budget principles, statistics, and familiarity with the Ministry of Finance basic revenue and expenditure structures.  Taymor is  currently on the Executive Board and a Trustee of the World Affairs Council of Orange County.
