First conceived by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in 2004 in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Quad held a virtual summit in March 2021 hosted by President Biden and attended by the Prime Minister of the other members, followed by an in-person summit in September that year at the White House.
The most recent meeting at this level was held in May 2023 where where the Leaders of Australia, India, Japan and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to work through the Quad to support a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient.
They said that their vision is “for a region that is peaceful and prosperous, stable and secure, and respectful of sovereignty – free from intimidation and coercion, and where disputes are settled in accordance with international law”.
